Read it on the visa sticker, field ๅ็ๆ้ / Duration of Each Stay. It is decided by the consulate that issued your visa โ two people with the same visa type can have different durations, so we cannot guess it from the type.
You must leave for a different country. New York โ Shanghai โ New York does not qualify. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan count as third regions. This is the condition travellers get wrong most often.
Transit does not open all of China. Each port opens its own zone โ the municipality alone for Beijing and Shanghai, the whole province for Fujian, eleven named cities for Sichuan. Check the zone for your port of entry before planning a trip inland.
240-hour transit covers 65 ports across 24 provinces. The list of eligible nationalities is around 54 โ sources differ, so confirm yours with your airline or the National Immigration Administration.
The allowed stay runs from 00:00 on the day after you enter. Enter on 1 March with 30 days, and your last legal day is 31 March.
This rule is stated in the texts on visa-free entry. For ordinary visas we could not find an official source that puts it as plainly โ confirm with the Exit-Entry Administration if your margin is thin.
Leave your email and your last legal day. We send one reminder ten days before, and one three days before. Nothing else.
